GITTE SCHÄFERBorn 1971 in Stuttgart. Lives in Berlin.
Gitte Schäfer, Rocha, 2004 Gitte Schäfer works with cultural emblems in her intimate paintings
and drawings. She works with romantic or romanticized motives, which
she collects from e.g. magazines, postcards or china. For Schäfer's
first presentation in the gallery, she collected a series of works,
revolving around the dichotomy nature-culture. An Ikebana (a Japenese zen-activity) bouquet,
sticking horisontally out of the wall, accentuates nature-culture
issues in her works. A close up of a German mustard jar looks
like an architectual drawing. A close up of Python snake skin looks
resembles tiles from a swimming pool. Paraphrases of Mondrian, Picasso
and Japenese engravings are done in various techniques, and are
structually and formally reflected in the surrounding pieces. Schäfer
experiments with many techniques, e.g. pencil on gesso, perforated and
painted metal, and painted MDF boxes, which she engraves and thus makes
the wood appear as a mixture of engraving, object and drawing. For more images of Gitte Schäfer's works and her solo show from 2005, please click here |
